Reading Reach Microschool
Enroll your child in a microschool class directed by a reading specialist / credentialed teacher in Oceanside. We use the Orton-Gillingham approach to teach students to read. We work on foundational reading skills such as phonics, phonological & phonemic awareness, spelling, fluency, and proper handwriting/letter formation. Multi-sensory structured literacy is used for all students and follows a research-based approach.
Students attending Reading Reach classes can be homeschooled via their own PSA, through a PSP, or charter homeschool program (we currently do not accept charter funds). If you are new to homeschooling and need help figuring out which legal homeschooling option is best for your family, we are here to help!
We will engage in language arts, reading, writing, and spelling instruction every day. We will also participate in multisensory math daily, and science/STEM/social studies on a rotating basis.
Our classroom has about 10 students and enrollment options for 2-5 days per week.
We offer three days at our Jeffries Ranch location, and two days per week at the Breakwater Campus.
Flexible Schedule - Choose 2-5 days per week between our two Oceanside locations.
2 days per week - $299/month
3 days per week - $350/month
4 days per week - $429/month
5 days per week - $479/month

We will cover reading foundational skills and spelling through multi-sensory literacy methods using the Orton-Gillingham approach.
We will also participate in multisensory math daily. Being kind and playing fair are part of our studies as well.
Reading Reach has two locations in Oceanside to choose from.
Our first site is operated out of our founder's home classroom in the Jeffries Ranch area (92057). We will spend most of our time in our home classroom or backyard outdoor area. We'll occasionally venture to the park down the street. Our director has pet dogs onsite (which are family-friendly), however students will not be interacting with the pets.
Our second location is in coastal Oceanside, located at Breakwater Community Church. There is a spacious outdoor area for learning and playing, and multiple indoor classrooms for us to utilize, including a kitchen facility and a small stage for performances!
Meet our Director / Credentialed Teacher
Julie Herd is a Reading Specialist, credentialed teacher, and homeschooling mom. She’s a former Kindergarten classroom teacher and has been an Education Coordinator, Mentor Teacher and Trainer, school administrator, and Home Based Services Coordinator. She is currently completing her Master's degree in Literacy and Reading Education at CSUF. Julie is trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading. She has a Child Development Permit at the Program Director level and has been working in the field of education for over 19 years. Julie created Reading Reach to make reading services available to homeschooling families and striving readers, including those with dyslexia. She helps students reach their goals in reading by empowering them with literacy! Reading Reach offers reading tutoring (TK-8), dyslexia screening, and micro-school classes (TK-3). Reading Reach serves Oceanside CA and surrounding areas, and has been a licensed business since 2021. Julie's husband, Matt Herd, is a little league baseball coach and our occasional instructional assistant. References for Julie and Matt are available upon request.
With a small class size, we will meet each student at their level and challenge them to make progress while finding joy in learning.
Students will make friends and gain social skills while having fun and engaging their minds.
Learning how to be kind and play fair with one another is a skill we will practice.
This program is best for children in grades Kinder-3rd, however students in grades 4-5 could possibly be approved (siblings or a child with reading difficulties).
We do not require masks or vaccines. Please keep your child home if they are sick.
