Located in a spacious six-room facility at 2181 El Camino Real, Suites 302–303 in Oceanside, CA, we offer a welcoming environment for families, including a comfortable reception area with guest Wi-Fi.

Since becoming a licensed business in 2021, Reading Reach has remained committed to excellence. We were named Oceanside's Best Tutoring Service in 2024.  Our administrators are proud members of The International Dyslexia Association, The International Literacy Association, and founding members of The Reading League California.

Julie Herd, MS, C-SLCT, RLLS

Founder, CEO, Reading & Dyslexia Intervention Specialist

 Julie Herd is a credentialed Reading and Literacy Leadership Specialist in the state of California. She holds a Master of Science in Reading and Literacy Education and a Bachelor of Science in Human Services from California State University, Fullerton. Julie is certified by the Center for Effective Reading Instruction (CERI), an affiliate of the International Dyslexia Association.

A highly skilled practitioner, Julie specializes in dyslexia intervention through evidence-based Structured Literacy and the Orton-Gillingham approach. She has received formal training and practicum experience under the instruction and mentorship of Orton-Gillingham Academy fellows, as well as Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionists.

Julie’s commitment to advancing literacy has earned national and international recognition. In 2024, she was awarded Nessy’s Teacher of the Year – Dyslexia Aware (1st place in the United States and 3rd globally). In 2025, she was nominated again for Nessy's Science of Reading Teacher of the Year and was selected as an Honorable Mention Winner for the Learning Ally Winslow Coyne Reitnouer Excellence in Education Award, which honors exceptional educators across the U.S. for their impact on struggling readers.

Julie’s professional background includes roles as a classroom teacher, school administrator, education coordinator, and Home-Based Services Director. She holds a Child Development Permit at the Program Director level and a Career Technical Education (CTE) credential in Child Development, with a Reading and Literacy Added Authorization. She has also completed the California Dyslexia Initiative’s Dyslexia and Dysgraphia training for educators.

As the founder of Reading Reach Literacy Center, Julie is dedicated to expanding access to high-quality reading intervention rooted in the science of reading. She is passionate about providing structured literacy support to students with reading challenges, including dyslexia, and creating alternative educational opportunities for homeschoolers through small-group instruction.
 

Credentialed Reading and Literacy Leadership Specialists are authorized to perform the following duties in grades twelve and below, including preschool, and in classes organized primarily for adults:
-Provide direct reading intervention to students and adapt instructional routines and strategies to provide direct specialized reading instruction to students with severe reading difficulties, including monitoring and adjusting intervention instruction;
-Coordinate adoption and facilitate implementation of adopted literacy curricula, including providing training to teachers;
-Select and administer reading and literacy assessments, interpret results to determine student growth and identification of struggling students, select interventions, communicate results, and provide guidance and coaching to teachers;
-Design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive literacy plan;
-Support students’ literacy development and inform and train teachers in literacy skills using information and communication technologies; and
-Evaluate literacy practices and report findings, guide teachers and administrators in collaborative efforts to design, implement, and evaluate local, state and/or federal programs, and plan and conduct staff development.

Matt Herd

COO, Reading Tutor

Matt is an Orton-Gillingham trained tutor (70+ hours at the Associate's level) who has been trained by official Orton-Gillingham Academy instructors/fellows.  He is a homeschooling dad, and a former little league baseball coach.  He has completed the dyslexia module at the UC/CSU California Collaborative for Neurodiversity and Learning as well as the CA Dyslexia Initiative Dyslexia & Dysgraphia training for educators.  

Lea Martinez, M.Ed.

Reading Tutor

Lea is an Orton-Gillingham tutor who has been trained by official Orton-Gillingham Academy instructors/fellows.  Lea has a Master's degree in Educational Leadership. She is a former credentialed teacher who is experienced in individualized reading intervention and working with students in special education settings.  Lea has also completed the CA Dyslexia Initiative Dyslexia & Dysgraphia training for educators.

Christine Kopfstein

Reading Tutor, Credentialed Teacher

Christine is a structured literacy trained teacher with a Multiple-Subject Teaching Credential.  She has a background as a classroom teacher, and is dedicated to fostering student growth. Christine has been trained in structured literacy practices and has completed the CA Dyslexia Initiative Dyslexia & Dysgraphia training for educators. 

Molly Carpenter, M.A.

Reading Tutor, Credentialed Teacher

Molly is an Orton-Gillingham trained teacher who has a master's degree in education and a CA multiple-subject teaching credential.  She is bi-lingual and has experience working as a reading intervention teacher as well as an elementary school teacher.  At Reading Reach, Molly uses her expertise to provide literacy intervention to striving readers. 

Stefanie Servin, M.A.

Reading Tutor, Credentialed Teacher

Stefanie is an experienced educator with a master's degree in education and a CA multiple-subject teaching credential.  She has been working in the education field for twenty years and was named her district's Teacher of the Year in 2018.  Stefanie is committed to improving learning experiences for striving readers at Reading Reach Literacy Center.
